Need Food

I go to the food pantry, ours is run by a local church. I can't remember how I found out about it. Maybe try your town hall, or, church see if they know of anywhere. This is a small town, but, I now a larger town near here runs a soup kitchen, and they also run a community pantry. The only drawback of my local pantry is you don't get any dairy items, or toiletries, or cleaning products - just canned goods, frozen meat, and (fresh bread/ pastries when available donated from Shaws I believe).
Hope this helps.

Oh, and I forgot to mention, they are usually open Saturday mornings, they put a sign outside "Pantry Open". Say maybe if you look around the churches you might catch something.

A little light at the end of the tunnel

Hi Everyone,
Well, I'm back to square one again, the contract for the job I took has ended. Since my last post, I signed on for unemployment benefits (which have now run out) and still looking for work. I also, re-applied for food stamps, they gave me $43, with no real explanation how they figured that out, and now I have to re-apply again. As I've said in earlier posts, I'm from England, lived and worked in America for 31 yrs, and I'm not familiar with how social security etc. work over here. Although, I haven't been told specifically by Social Services, but, I believe, I cannot get Social Security because I'm not a citizen, although I am a permanent resident.
Anyways, a bit of good news, I have an interview today - for a cleaning job - not my usual occupation - but, at this point I'll take anything!

Keep your chins up....

Update (as promised) on my circumstances.

Sorry, I haven't been in touch for a while. Here in an update on my circumstances.

I went for an interview at Social Services, and as far as I could tell, applied for everything that was on offer, (with the help of the lady from 'The Grapevine' who helped me with my application). At the interview at Social Services, they more or less just took copies of my cancelled cheques for rent, green card, birth certificates, passports etc..A couple of days later, I got a letter stating that I qualifies for 'Healthy Kids Gold' and foodstamps (food only). This is a great help, but, I still do not have any cash for things like rent and gas to to job interviews.
But, things have looked up in the last couple of weeks - I got offered 2 jobs on the same day, one was travelling over an hour, 7:30 - 5:30 (full time) for $9 per hr, the other part-time 9-3 a half hour away $15 an hr. Weighing every thing up I took the second job. We only have 1 car with 3 of us driving. I start on Monday. I'll see how it goes with the cash - but at least I'm not as anxious as I was a couple of weeks ago.

Best Wishes to all

I don't know where to start.

I went and got some help from a local help group, with filling in forms. Now I'm waiting for Social Security to call me with an appointment. There's an awful lot of documentation I have to take. This form was filled out online, and nearly towards the end of completion an automatic message popped up, giving a list of things I don't qualify for (nearly everything), but, that I should carry on with the application - which I'm doing. (I suspect I don't qualify because I am not a citizen, I do hold a green card and have worked and paid my taxes for the last 30 yrs.)

HELP!!!!!

in response to Mrz.Hamilton...   Thanks for your thoughts Mrz.Hamilton. I have an appointment later this morning, to see if I can get WIC. I'm hoping they can give me some advice as to where to get further help.

I don't know where to start.

I'm in Southern New Hampshire. Does anyone know of any financial assistance I can get. I don't even know if I'm using the right terms to ask people. I'm a legal resident (i.e I have a green card), so,I really don't know the system. In England (where I'm from) we would go to the 'Jobcentre' and if we needed further help 'The Citizens Advice Bureau'. They would give advice and take care of everything. I don't know of any equivalent here.

HELP!!!!!

My situation isn't quite as bad as yours, but, I feel your frustration. I've been living on severance pay since April, and now, I'm about to apply for food stamps (if I can). I've been looking for work, have done a couple of temps. But, I seem to be caught in a trap, I resisted claiming anything, until I really need it. There's a lot of talk about 'emergency help', but I'm not finding any. The other thing is, that I might not be able to claim anything, because I am not a citizen, even though I have been a legal residence, and have worked and paid taxes since 1984.

Need financial aid.

My work got outsourced in April, since then I've been living on my severance package, hoping that I would find a paying job before it ran out. I've done a couple of temping jobs, but, now I'm worried that I won't be able to pay next month's rent and telephone bill. Is there anywhere I could get temporary help?
